LHA Research Visit to Universitas Gadjah Mada
Using funding received from the UCL Global Engagement Fund Professor Rebecca Hardy and Dr Wahyu Wulaningsih visited the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 1-5 May 2017. The purpose of this first visit was to meet local researchers and discuss opportunities for future collaboration in the field of ageing research.
During the visit they met with local researchers from a number of fields from basic biology through to medicine. All these researchers have a common interest in ageing, particularly the role of birth weight, growth, and obesity. Although obesity is becoming more common in Indonesia, there is a persisting burden from under nutrition, which promotes the need for more understanding about how these two states influence health in later life. This subject was discussed with great interest and the LHA researchers also visited the outpatient clinics of the Paediatrics and Internal Medicine Department at Sardjito Hospital to learn from local clinicians about health problems they frequently encounter in Indonesia.
Prof Hardy delivered a lecture on Healthy Ageing, part of the Continuing Medical Education activities organised by UGM, which focused on insights from the NSHD using a life course epidemiological approach to ageing. Prof Hardy and Dr Wulaningsih also attended a local workshop about writing for publication where they engaged with local researchers and discussed their experiences of academic writing and how to report research findings.
We hope that this visit will be the start of a new successful academic collaboration with UGM and look forward to working with them on joint projects in the future.
