Bone and muscle ageing project
The Bone and Muscle Ageing Project Management Group (BMAPMG) is
part of the operational structure of LHA and NSHD and responsible
to the Director. It has been established for the purpose of
maximising the scientific potential of the new NSHD data on bone
and muscle structure and function that are being collected in the
current NSHD clinic data collection.

New data being collected
DXA bone density and body composition scans:
hip (total, femoral neck, trochanter, Ward’s), lumbar spine (L1-4),
whole body and region BMD, fat and lean mass, vertebral fracture
assessment, aortic calcification score
pQCT scans of radius (at 4% and 50% sites):
trabecular and cortical BMD, cortical, muscle and fat area,
endosteal and periosteal circumference, stress strain
index, moment of inertia.
